Lukashenko arrives at UN Climate Summit

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has arrived at the UN Climate Summit in Dubai, BelTA has learned.

In Expo City the Belarusian head of state was welcomed by UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and UN Secretary General António Guterres. All in all, about 150 heads of state and government are expected to attend the summit on 1-2 December.

A plenary session will open after the photo ceremonies and the opening of the summit. Aleksandr Lukashenko is expected to voice Belarus' approaches and proposals to address global issues of climate and environmental security. On the sidelines of the summit, the head of state will hold a number of meetings and negotiations.

The global forum is the central event of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The summit is taking place in the futuristic Expo City Dubai. In 2021-2022, it hosted World Expo, the first one in the Middle East.

On 30 November Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Aleinik said that international cooperation on climate must be based on a non-discriminatory and equitable basis as he talked to the media on the sidelines of the COP28 summit in Dubai. He noted that the participation of Belarus at the highest level emphasizes the importance that Belarus attaches to environmental safety and environmental protection. "Climate issues unite all countries. This is a unifying issue on the international agenda. We will contribute towards strengthening international cooperation on climate issues. This cooperation should be built on a non-discriminatory, fair and inclusive basis and contribute to the solution of global issues," the diplomat said.
