Vitebsk fur garment manufacturer, Krasny Oktyabr respite debts
The Vitebsk Oblast Council of Deputies allowed the two companies of the Belarusian state concern for production and selling of light industrial goods (Bellegprom) to delay the debt payments to the local budgets. These companies are the Vitebsk fur garment manufacturer and the open joint-stock company Krasny Oktyabr, deputy chief of the financial department of the administration in the Vitebsk oblast executive committee Boris Kichanovsky told BelTA.

Footwear producer Marko to buy state share in Krasny Oktyabr
The government is selling its share in open joint-stock company Krasny Oktyabr to limited liability company Marko. The purchase contract will be signed by July 15, Marko's Director General Nikolai Martynov told BelTA. In order to stabilise the financial and economic performance of OAO Krasny Oktyabr the head of state signed decree No 324 on June 13, which envisages selling the state share (83.64% or 6,024,867 shares) in Krasny Oktyabr.

Vitebsk oblast puts Br11 billion in demography programme
Over Br11 billion was utilized in the Vitebsk oblast to implement the demographic security programme, Mikhail Leschinsky, the chairman of the committee for labour, employment and social protection of the oblast executive committee, stated at a session of the Vitebsk oblast executive committee on June 12. The programme enabled the oblast to complete the reconstruction of the Orsha maternity home, open a cardiosurgery department in the oblast hospital.

Scientists of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine supported an idea to set up the trans-border tourist route From the Varangians To the Greeks. They expressed their opinion towards the route during the research conference From the Varangians To the Greeks: historical-cultural transit via Belarus. Traditions and Prospects which opened in Polotsk on May 30. Alexander Lokotko, a corresponding member of the Belarus National Academy of Sciences, the director of the Institute of Art History, Ethnography and Folklore, Oleg Ionnisyan, the head of the architectural archeology department of Russia’s State Hermitage, Alexander Motsya, a corresponding member of the Ukraine State National Academy of Sciences, consider that the trans-border tourist route will promote the unification of the cultural and historical potential of the European continent.

Alla Pugacheva to open Slavic Bazaar in Vitebsk
Russia’s famous singer Alla Pugacheva will partake in the opening ceremony of the 17th international arts festival “Slavic Bazaar in Vitebsk”, First Deputy Culture Minister of Belarus Vladimir Rylatko told BelTA. The cast of the opening gala on July 11 will be really star-studded. The cast includes Nikolai Baskov, Nedezhda Kadysheva and her group Zolotoye Koltso, Tamara Gvertsiteli, Iosif Kobson, Maksim Galkin, Laima Vaikule and also the participants of the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 Diana Gurtskaya (Georgia), Jelena Tomasevic (Serbia), and Ani Lorak (Ukraine).

Vitebsk, Smolensk oblasts implement joint projects in construction, energy and agriculture
A plan of joint events on trade and economic, sci-tech and humanitarian-cultural cooperation between the Vitebsk and Smolensk oblasts for 2008 was signed by Vladimir Andreichenko, the Chairman of the Vitebsk oblast executive committee, and Sergei Antufiyev, the Governor of the Smolensk oblast, on May 23. The Smolensk oblast is an old partner of the Vitebsk oblast and a place for advancing the products of Vitebsk producers to the other regions of Russia.

Belneftekhim to sell stakes in Naftan and Polymir
The Belneftekhim concern will submit the proposals on selling stakes in Naftan refinery and Polymir company to the government by the end of the year, deputy chairman of the Belneftekhim concern Mikhail Osipenko told reporters on May 20. According to him, Belneftekhim is considering selling the blocks of shares of these companies in package. “This year we will prepare Naftan and polymer for the merger and will offer them for investors as one single economic entity,” Mikhail Osipenko said.

Small towns of Vitebsk oblast, Sweden implement joint projects
Delegations of Swedish towns Tranas, Odeshog, Aneby, and Ydre are studying possibilities of cooperation with small towns of the Vitebsk oblast. The delegations are visiting towns Disna and Obol and agro-town Bocheikovo today, Disna mayor Olga Moroz told BelTA. In late 2007 as part of the complex programme for developing regions, small and medium urban settlements were twinned with Tranas and Odeshog, agro-town Bocheikovo — Aneby, the village of Perebrodye — Ydre.

Replica Victory Banner to lead May 9 march in Vitebsk
For the first time a replica of the Victory Banner, the official symbol of the victory of the Soviet nation in the Great Patriotic War, will lead the solemn march of veterans, labour and educational collectives, and general public dedicated to the Victory Day in Vitebsk on May 9. It will be the main peculiarity of celebrating the 63rd anniversary of the victory in Vitebsk, said chairman of the oblast council of the public association of veterans Gennady Gerasimovich.

Olga Khizhinkova from Vitebsk wins Miss Belarus 2008
Olga Khizhinkova from Vitebsk took the title “Miss Belarus 2008” at the 6th national beauty pageant in the Palace of Sports on May 2. The major prize for the most beautiful Belarusian is a 100-gramm white gold crown decorated with nearly 500 jewels. Apart from the title, an apartment in Minsk and the crown that is a challenge prize, the winner got the right to present Belarus at the international beauty pageants.
